Before Treatment:
-
Sun Avoidance: leading up to your treatment is important. We cannot treat patients who have an active sun burn or have too much recent sun exposure.
-
Numbing cream is not necessary: The pain associated with a PDL treatment is fairly minimal, much like a light rubber band snap. The majority of patients will not require numbing cream, but a prescription of numbing cream may be called in at patient’s request. Please note that numbing cream can sometimes flush the skin making for a more aggressive treatment.
After Treatment:
- Immediately following treatment you will likely see redness, swelling. and bruising. This will typically be the worst for the first 3-5 hours and will begin to fade.
- Possible bruising. Depending on the settings used and condition being treated, bruising may occur and is very normal. The bruising is usually accompanied by some increased swelling. Bruising can last 2-3 weeks.
- You may have been provided with a sample of triamcinolone (steroid) cream. If so, apply twice a day for 3-5 days to help decrease inflammation. Do not apply for a period of longer than one week.
- Apply gentle moisturizer twice a day as long as the bruising/red discoloration (purpura) is present and once per day if there is no discoloration or scabbing. It is important to keep the area moist until healed.
- Icing is recommended following the procedure. Icing over the first 24 hours will help decrease inflammation. Icing should be done in 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off intervals.
- Any discomfort you may have (usually not lasting more than a few hours, if any) can be relieved with acetaminophen (Tylenol).
- Avoid taking a bath during the first 48 hours as the intense heat may cause discomfort.
- Comfortably warm showers are recommended. Gently pat the area dry. Do not rub with a towel or washcloth.
- Do not rub, scratch, or pick at the treated area if bruising/red discoloration (purpura) is present.
Avoid exposure to the sun. If sun exposure is expected, apply an SPF 30 or higher sunblock

Vbeam Laser: Similar Treatments on the Market
A Pulsed Dye Laser (PDL) is the gold standard for treating unwanted blood vessels, however there are other options on the market you will hear about. Here is how they stack up.
- KTP laser. This is probably the best direct competitor. It also targets blood vessels, however this laser is a slight step down in our opinion from a PDL.
- Topical therapies. There are some great topical treatments now available for rosacea however, these are quick fixes that wear off completely within hours.
- IPL Photofacial. This “all in one” device does great for those patients who have both brown and red spots they would like improved simultaneously, however it does not compare to a PDL in the treatment of blood vessels. Many other clinics or spas simply do not have a specialty laser like ours, so this is their only option.
- Sclerotherapy. This is our preferred method for treating spider veins on the legs even over a PDL. There are times when a PDL treatment can help get those last few veins after a sclerotherapy treatment. Sclerotherapy is only for use on spider veins on the legs so it does not compare with any other application of a PDL.
Why choose us for your Vbeam Treatment
-
long-term approach
Rosacea can be difficult for patients because it’s not a "treat once and then you're done" kind of diagnosis. We work with our patients to discuss things like finances to help set up a treatment plan that is sustainable long term.
-
Thousands of Treatments
Dr. Smart has actually used this laser more than any other. So much so that he has had to replace it… TWICE! When it comes to treating redness there are very few in the country that have more experience than Smart Skin Dermatology.

Vbeam Laser FAQ
Does the Vbeam laser treatment hurt?
Most patients find the Vbeam to be our most comfortable laser treatment, with over 95% of patients completing their session without the need for topical numbing cream. The Vbeam is uniquely equipped with a Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD), which delivers a quick burst of cryogen spray milliseconds before each laser pulse. This advanced cooling technology protects the skin and creates a "cold snap" sensation that masks the heat of the laser. The result is a highly tolerable, "walk-in-walk-out" procedure that allows you to return to your day with ease.
