Before Treatment:
-
Get a valid medical diagnosis. Our clean up visit requires a referral from a dermatologist. This way, you can have peace of mind knowing we are only removing benign lesions. We value the power of regular skin
exams. -
Take an inventory of the spots you want treated, especially if the lesions are dispersed across multiple body locations. We don’t want to overlook the spots you want treated, and sometimes patients forget “that one spot”.
After Treatment:
-
The overall goal of caring for these spots will be to avoid any crusting or scabbing. Crusting and scabbing can lead to delayed and suboptimal healing.
-
Moisturise with ointment. A layer of ointment should be on the treated areas at all times until they have healed.
-
Examples include Vaseline, Aquaphor, and Vaniply Ointments. Do not allow areas to dry out.
-
-
Cover Areas if possible. Band-Aids can also help keep the area moist and clean. A layer of ointment should be covered with a Band-Aid when possible. If there are too many spots or the size makes covering difficult, then the ointment should be applied at more frequent intervals.
-
A gentle cleanser may be used to wash the area while bathing, but avoid any rubbing or scrubbing. Pat dry.
-
Makeup. It is recommended to wait until spots have healed over before applying base or
foundation makeup directly over the spots. Makeup can be applied around spots while healing. -
Transition to regular facial moisturiser once treated spots have healed over and are no longer able to crust or scab.
-
Immediately following treatment, you will likely see redness and swelling. This will typically be the worst for the first 3-5 hours and will begin to fade. Swelling varies but can last a few days.
-
Any discomfort you may have can be relieved with acetaminophen (Tylenol).
-
If any crusting or scabbing does occur, begin vinegar water soaks. Instructions below.
Vinegar Water Soaks:
- Mix 1 tablespoon white vinegar with 1 quart of water. Can store in fridge between uses.
-
Soak a cotton cloth or gauze in the solution.
- Wring out the cloth and apply it to the area for roughly 15 minutes.
-
Never double-dip the cloth into a mixed solution.
- Repeat 2-4 times per day.
Side Effects:
- Common: Redness, bleeding, pain around the site, scabbing
-
Rare: Scarring, infection

"Similar Treatments on the Market:
While our Derm Clean Up is the ideal, cost-effective solution for clearing away common "bumps and bubbles," we recognize that every patient's skin journey is unique. Depending on the sheer volume of lesions, their location on the face, or your desire for overall skin tightening, a more intensive laser approach may be a better investment.
We believe in absolute transparency when it comes to your results. Below is a breakdown of how our Derm Clean Up compares to other clinical standards, helping you choose the path that best aligns with your aesthetic goals and budget.
- CO2 "Full" Laser.
A CO2 "full" treatment will effectively treat most of the same items that a derm clean up would target. If you have lots of lesions on the face and would like to enjoy the other benefits of a deep ablative resurfacing, then it would be worth considering a CO2 full laser instead. - CO2 "Spot" Laser.
Our CO2 spot treatment is the equivalent to a derm clean up, but performed by Dr. Smart. This is the ideal option for patients wanting the very best outcome or for patients with larger facial lesions that they are concerned about scarring. - Cryotherapy.
Cryotherapy is a great tool and one we use every day in general dermatology. However, cryotherapy is less elegant and can more frequently lead to a poor cosmetic outcome. It has a tendency to hypopigment the skin where treatment is performed. For that reason, we don't typically utilize it for derm clean up treatments.
Why Choose us for Your Derm Clean Up Treatment
-
Surgical Master Trained
Our "Derm Clean Up" providers are not just technicians; they are meticulously trained under the direct supervision of our Fellowship-Trained Mohs Surgeon and Cosmetic Dermatologist. After thousands of hours of clinical mentorship in high-stakes skin surgery, our team brings a level of precision to a simple skin tag removal that you won't find anywhere else. You are quite literally in the best hands possible.
-
Safety-First
Medical Verification Required: We believe cosmetic clarity should never come at the expense of medical safety. Every "Clean Up" session requires a prior referral from a dermatologist. This ensures that every bump we remove has been medically cleared as benign, giving you absolute peace of mind that we are treating aesthetics—not masking a potential skin cancer.
-
Objective Technology
We aren't limited to a single tool. Because our practice houses a world-class array of lasers, electrodessication, and surgical instruments, we choose the method that ensures the most "elegant" heal for your specific skin type. We recommend what works best for your anatomy, not what’s easiest for us to perform.
-
Dermatological Authority
As skin specialists, we understand the cellular behavior of lesions like DPN and Sebaceous Hyperplasia. This deep medical knowledge allows us to provide results that go far beyond the surface-level "freezing" or "burning" found at a standard spa or generalist's office.
Derm Clean Up FAQ
Does medical insurance cover these removals?
In short: medical insurance often "stinks" when it comes to benign spots. Most insurance carriers view the removal of skin tags, DPN, or seborrheic keratoses as "cosmetic" or "not medically necessary," leaving patients to deal with high deductibles or outright denials. We created our Flat-Fee Derm Clean Up specifically to bypass the red tape. By offering a straightforward, transparent cost, we allow you to take control of your skin's appearance without the headache of insurance paperwork or surprise bills.
