IPL Photofacial Treatment In Lehi, Utah

Experience the difference of this game-changing custom-made Smart Skin laser treatment.

What is an Advanced Photofacial?

We’ve upgraded our Advanced Photofacial to the Nordlys™ system. Unlike traditional IPLs that use broad spectrums of light (which can cause unnecessary heat), the Nordlys Elliptical IPL™ uses Narrowband Technology to target specific pigments with more precision and less downtime.

What exactly is an IPL? Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a non-laser, light-based therapy that uses high-intensity pulses of broad-spectrum light to penetrate the skin. While a laser uses a single, concentrated wavelength (like a laser pointer), IPL works more like a powerful camera flash, sending out multiple wavelengths of light at once.

      IPL Photofacial: How it Works

aging, dna, and sun cause blood vessels and brown pigment

Aging occurs with time & environmental factors

This includes pigmentation, sun damage, rosacea, and blood vessels.

      science behind an IPL photofacial

      Spectrum targeting

Lasers are a single wavelength, specially designed to target a specific “chromophore” or substance in the skin. We commonly target either hemoglobin or melanin separately.

An IPL is not a laser because it emits a spectrum of light. This spectrum hits more than a single chromophore, making it a “do it all” device. It can target multiple concerns in a single treatment.

IPL is like a triathlon athlete

      The Treatment Explained

An IPL is similar to a triathlon athlete. This single entity competes in multiple events and is pretty good at each. It may not be as good as the individual who specializes in a single event, but the multitasking capabilities of this device make it incredibly valuable when looking at a larger collection of events or concerns.

Consider that in the Olympics, a triathlon athlete can win gold, but that same individual is probably not on the Olympic swim team competing at the top of that field. That is how an IPL compares to specialty lasers.

      brown pigment lightening from IPL

      Results: Melanin & brown pigment

An IPL will cast a spectrum of light from 530 - 790 nm. It targets melanin across its absorption spectrum.

When targeting primarily brown pigment, an IPL gets its nickname “the next day laser”. Downtime is very fast and brown spots will lighten quickly. Usually 2-4 treatments are needed to completely remove brown spots.

      Results: Blood vessels & hemoglobin

An IPL combo treatment will cast a spectrum of light from 530 - 750 nm. It has a slightly smaller spectrum to more adequately target red concerns.

Both red and brown pigments are targeted in this treatment. There is more swelling and potential bruising. Usually, 2-4 treatments are needed to remove brown and red spots.

      IPL Photofacial Treatment Targets

      Brown pigmentation

      Brown pigmentation

The "Photofacial" Glow. Reverse the signs of sun-drenched summers. IPL acts as a magnet for excess melanin, seeking out sun spots, freckles, and "liver spots" and lifting them to the surface. Watch as your hyperpigmentation darkens and naturally flakes away, revealing a clear, porcelain-like finish beneath

      Health & Preventative

      Health & Preventative

Think of IPL as a "workout" for your skin’s cellular memory. Regular IPL sessions have been clinically shown to alter the gene expression of aged skin cells, making them behave more like younger, healthier cells. It’s not just about looking better today; it’s about slowing down the clock for tomorrow.

      Rosacea

      Rosacea

While IPL is famous for pigment, it is equally powerful at calming the diffuse redness of rosacea. The broad-spectrum light is absorbed by the shallow vascular network, reducing the overall "heat" and background redness that topical creams often fail to control.

      Facial telangiectasias

      Facial telangiectasias

For those fine red lines that makeup can’t seem to hide, IPL offers a non-invasive solution. By targeting and eliminating individual facial veins, this treatment restores a smooth, vessel-free appearance to your most delicate facial features.

      Aftercare

      Before Treatment:

      • Sun Avoidance: This is important in the 2 weeks leading up to your treatment. We cannot treat patients who have an active sunburn or have too much recent sun exposure.

      • Numbing Cream: Both lasers can be done without numbing cream, however we recommend it for comfort. A good layer of numbing creamshould be applied to the treatment area 30 minutes prior to treatment.

      • Valtrex: If you have a history of cold sores, patients should be on a preventative five-day course of anti-viral medication that starts the day before your treatment.

      • Bleaching Cream: Many patients will be prescribed some form of a bleaching regimen leading up to their laser treatment. Use as directed by your provider leading up to appointment.

      After Treatment:

      • Some swelling for the 2-7 days following treatment is expected. To minimize swelling, sleep elevated the night after the laser treatment (put an extra pillow under the head) and ice packs for the first 2 days, 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off.
      • Any discomfort you may have can be relieved with acetaminophen (Tylenol).

      • MILD - MODERATE REDNESS from 2-48 hours after treatment is very common. Bruising is possible, depending on the settings used and the condition being treated. Bruising can last 2-3 weeks.
      • Your BROWN SPOTS will flake off on their own like coffee grounds as you wash your face and shower over the next two (2) weeks. DO NOT scrub or exfoliate them to remove them.

      • Moisturize. Apply a gentle moisturizer twice a day until brown spots have fallen off and lightened. Larger spots may require an ointment-based moisturizer to avoid scabbing/crusting.
      • Wait 12 hours post-treatment before applying base or foundation makeup. Powder-based makeups are usually recommended post-procedurally, as you may experience some textural changes in brown spots.

      • You may have been provided with a sample of triamcinolone (steroid) cream. If so, apply twice a day for 2-3 days to help decrease inflammation. Avoid exposure to the sun. If sun exposure is expected, apply an SPF 30 or higher sunblock.

      Similar Treatments on the Market:

      • Chemical Peels.
The Advanced Photofacial is a step up and is the clear recommendation for treating sun damage or brown pigmentation in general. Chemical peels also fail to adequately address red pigmentation
      • Pico Resurfacing.  Pico treat pigment, sun damage, texture, fine lines, and wrinkles. Practically speaking, an Advanced Photofacial only treats pigment. We do not use that specific setting with the pico laser portion of the treatment.
      • CO2 Laser. There is a dramatic difference between a CO2 laser and an Advanced Photofacial. An easy way to think about it is one is for color and the other is color + texture.
      • Microneedling. Microneedling is not really comparable. No real textural improvement will be seen with an advanced photofacial in comparison to microneedling.

        One size doesn't fit all

There is a reason the IPL is the most performed treatment. It coincides with why the IPL also is the cause of the most complications. IPL devices are relatively cheap and if a clinic offers cosmetic treatments, they likely have this one. This causes overstretching of its practical uses. This is why at Smart Skin Dermatology, we have created a treatment that addresses the same pigment concerns that an IPL would but instead uses targeted and precise laser technology that is tailored to each individual's need.

Because lasers are so widely used with little supervision, many professionals tend to either over-treat or under-treat. Our experts have done thousands of treatments and have developed protocols to safely yet effectively achieve optimal endpoints.

      Is an IPL Photofacial painful?

Most patients describe the sensation of an IPL treatment as a series of quick, warm "snaps" or a light tapping against the skin, similar to a rubber band flick. While the procedure is very fast, your comfort is our priority. We offer high-potency topical numbing cream to significantly minimize any sensation, though many patients find the treatment tolerable enough to proceed without it. Our advanced IPL systems also feature integrated cooling technology that chilled the skin’s surface on contact, ensuring a safe and comfortable experience throughout the session.
