Derm Clean Up: How it works

benign skin lesions appear with age

Skin growths appear based on age, genetics & environmental factors

Skin growths come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and textures. Getting these examined is the main focus of a skin exam. As we age, the skin will begin growing various types of benign lesions.

insurance typically deny benign lesion removal

      The benign lesion treatment dilemma

Many skin growths are not cancerous. This is a good thing, but it can also make getting treatment a hassle. Insurances do not cover the removal of most benign skin lesions. A “Derm Clean Up” offers patients a flat fee removal service for our most common skin growths.

Derm clean up is like a handy man

      The Treatment Explained

A Derm Clean UP is like a handyman. A jack of all trades treatment that can use a variety of different tools, techniques, and expertise to get the job done. Whatever the job requires is what dictates the treatment, meaning no two treatments are exactly the same. The benefit of a handyman general contractor is that you can avoid hiring multiple specialists and receiving multiple bills. Sometimes you just want a one-stop shop.

Who qualifies for a Derm Clean UP?

Anyone who has been diagnoses with a benign skin growth within the last 12 months. This is needed because our cosmetic nurses who do this treatment cannot diagnose skin lesions.
All treatment visits are 30 minutes long.
5 minutes of prep & photos
      20 minutes of treatment
      5 minutes of aftercare
We will set a 20-minute timer and get to as many skin growths as we can in that time.

Comparing Costs (Flat Fee vs. Insurance)

We designed this treatment to serve our patients and our practice.

      Patient benefit

A cost-effective and convenient way to get rid of the spots insurance won't cover.

      Clinic benefit

A gateway into aesthetic treatments. Cosmetic treatments are not just for the "elite".

A combination of the of the following:

      10040

Acne surgery. Extraction or opening of milia.

      17110 or 17111

      Destruction of benign lesions

      11200 +/- 1201

Removal of skin tags, multiple tags

      Derm Clean Up Treatment Targets

      Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra

      Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra

Restore clarity to your complexion by removing the "peppered" appearance of DPN. By utilizing light electrodessication, we can erase these benign spots, providing a brighter and more refined skin surface in a single session.

      Seborrheic Keratoses

      Seborrheic Keratoses

These waxy, "stuck-on" growths can appear anywhere on the body and often feel rough or itchy. Whether they are flat or raised, our specialists can quickly destroy these lesions, allowing the skin to heal smoothly and seamlessly without the need for invasive surgery.

      Brown pigmentation

      Brown pigmentation

Milia are stubborn, tiny white cysts that often appear around the eyes and nose and cannot be "popped" like a typical blemish. We perform professional, sterile extractions that remove the keratin plug at the source, instantly smoothing the skin and preventing the inflammation that comes from home-extraction attempts.

      Sebaceous Hyperplasia

      Sebaceous Hyperplasia

These yellowish, doughnut-shaped bumps are actually enlarged oil glands. Because they sit deep in the skin, they require expert intervention. We use targeted energy to shrink the gland and flatten the bump, reducing the "cratered" appearance on the forehead and nose and restoring a balanced skin profile.

      Skin Tags

      Skin Tags

Clear away the skin tags that lead to irritation in high-friction areas like the neck, underarms, and eyelids. Our professional removal process is nearly painless and ensures that these benign growths are gone for good, leaving your skin soft and tag-free.

      Aftercare

      Before Treatment:

      • Get a valid medical diagnosis. Our clean up visit requires a referral from a dermatologist. This way, you can have peace of mind knowing we are only removing benign lesions. We value the power of regular skin
        exams.

      • Take an inventory of the spots you want treated, especially if the lesions are dispersed across multiple body locations. We don’t want to overlook the spots you want treated, and sometimes patients forget “that one spot”.

      After Treatment:

      • The overall goal of caring for these spots will be to avoid any crusting or scabbing. Crusting and scabbing can lead to delayed and suboptimal healing.

      • Moisturise with ointment. A layer of ointment should be on the treated areas at all times until they have healed.

        • Examples include Vaseline, Aquaphor, and Vaniply Ointments. Do not allow areas to dry out.

      • Cover Areas if possible. Band-Aids can also help keep the area moist and clean. A layer of ointment should be covered with a Band-Aid when possible. If there are too many spots or the size makes covering difficult, then the ointment should be applied at more frequent intervals.

      • A gentle cleanser may be used to wash the area while bathing, but avoid any rubbing or scrubbing. Pat dry.

      • Makeup. It is recommended to wait until spots have healed over before applying base or
foundation makeup directly over the spots. Makeup can be applied around spots while healing.

      • Transition to regular facial moisturiser once treated spots have healed over and are no longer able to crust or scab.

      • Immediately following treatment, you will likely see redness and swelling. This will typically be the worst for the first 3-5 hours and will begin to fade. Swelling varies but can last a few days.

      • Any discomfort you may have can be relieved with acetaminophen (Tylenol).

      • If any crusting or scabbing does occur, begin vinegar water soaks. Instructions below.

      Vinegar Water Soaks:

      • Mix 1 tablespoon white vinegar with 1 quart of water. Can store in fridge between uses.
      • Soak a cotton cloth or gauze in the solution.

      • Wring out the cloth and apply it to the area for roughly 15 minutes.
      • Never double-dip the cloth into a mixed solution.

      • Repeat 2-4 times per day.

      Side Effects:

      • Common: Redness, bleeding, pain around the site, scabbing
      • Rare: Scarring, infection

      "Similar Treatments on the Market:

While our Derm Clean Up is the ideal, cost-effective solution for clearing away common "bumps and bubbles," we recognize that every patient's skin journey is unique. Depending on the sheer volume of lesions, their location on the face, or your desire for overall skin tightening, a more intensive laser approach may be a better investment.

We believe in absolute transparency when it comes to your results. Below is a breakdown of how our Derm Clean Up compares to other clinical standards, helping you choose the path that best aligns with your aesthetic goals and budget.

      • CO2 "Full" Laser.
A CO2 "full" treatment will effectively treat most of the same items that a derm clean up would target. If you have lots of lesions on the face and would like to enjoy the other benefits of a deep ablative resurfacing, then it would be worth considering a CO2 full laser instead.

      • CO2 "Spot" Laser.
Our CO2 spot treatment is the equivalent to a derm clean up, but performed by Dr. Smart. This is the ideal option for patients wanting the very best outcome or for patients with larger facial lesions that they are concerned about scarring.
      • Cryotherapy.
Cryotherapy is a great tool and one we use every day in general dermatology. However, cryotherapy is less elegant and can more frequently lead to a poor cosmetic outcome. It has a tendency to hypopigment the skin where treatment is performed. For that reason, we don't typically utilize it for derm clean up treatments.

        Dermatological Authority

As skin specialists, we understand the cellular behavior of lesions like DPN and Sebaceous Hyperplasia. This deep medical knowledge allows us to provide results that go far beyond the surface-level "freezing" or "burning" found at a standard spa or generalist's office.

      Derm Clean Up FAQ

Does medical insurance cover these removals?

In short: medical insurance often "stinks" when it comes to benign spots. Most insurance carriers view the removal of skin tags, DPN, or seborrheic keratoses as "cosmetic" or "not medically necessary," leaving patients to deal with high deductibles or outright denials. We created our Flat-Fee Derm Clean Up specifically to bypass the red tape. By offering a straightforward, transparent cost, we allow you to take control of your skin's appearance without the headache of insurance paperwork or surprise bills.
