Dr. David Smart, MD, and Lindsey Smith, PA-C shared their 2023 skincare resolutions on Instagram at the beginning of January, just in time for New Year’s. But there is never a wrong time to set goals, so we’re walking you through their resolutions, and offering you some ideas to revamp your skincare routine in 2023 with tips from our dermatologists and providers!

1. Don’t Give Up on Your Retinoid

While retinoids do wonders for your skin, the work they do can leave you feeling dry and sensitive in the beginning. Rather than throwing your retinoid away or setting it aside in 2023, make sure you are using one that your skin can tolerate, and use a good moisturizer prior to retinoid application. You will get the best results with consistent use over time, so stick with it. See some of our favorite retinoids here!

2. Respect The Skin Barrier

After working out, your body needs to rest to repair itself. In a similar fashion, after going through your skincare routine, your skin needs to rest. Make sure to give your barrier the time it needs to recover from all the good work you’re putting in and don’t overdo it, more is not always better.

3. Try Skin Cycling

Having specific days and times of days where you complete certain parts of your skincare routine is important. Creating an effective pattern that you consistently follow can be the difference between seeing your skin health improve or not.

4. Use The Right Products for Your Skin Type

Everybody is unique and what works best for your friends and family may differ from what works best for you. Take your time to learn about your skin and research specific products that work well with your particular skin type and concern. A lot of time and money can be saved by doing proper self-study and analysis. If you want help figuring out what products will work well for your skin type, book an appointment with one of our providers!

5. Simplify Your Skincare Routine

Any good skincare routine has the foundation of cleansing, moisturizing, and protecting. Once you have this down you can add in other products to help with specific concerns; anti-aging, Rosacea, Melasma, etc. Make sure you take care of the basics before complicating things.

Want a few more resolutions? Keep reading for 5 additional tips to add to your 2023 resolutions:

1. Be Gentle

Even if your skin isn’t sensitive, there are benefits to being gentle with it. Harsh soaps and scrubs can damage your skin and remove its natural oils, leading to dryness, irritation, and even more inflammation and acne. We recommend being very gentle with physical exfoliants or opting to use a chemical exfoliant instead! It may take some self-control, but this could be the best way to revamp your skincare routine in 2023!

2. Wear Sunscreen Every Day

Yes, even on cloudy and snowy days! UV rays can still penetrate through clouds and cause serious damage to our skin cells. Protect yourself and prevent the most common cause of cancer! See some of our favorite SPF’s here!

3. Hydrate Your Skin

It is a myth that drinking water actually hydrates your skin, except in cases of severe dehydration, however, it doesn’t hurt. Hydration is best fed to the skin on the surface, so immediately after showering apply a thicker moisturizer and avoid products with alcohol. Incorporating products with hyaluronic acid can also be beneficial.

4. Get Enough Sleep

A lack of sleep can cause dullness in our complexion, create dark circles under our eyes, and encourage breakouts due to stress hormones released when we don’t sleep enough. Aim for at least 7 hours per night, but know that everyone is different and you might need more!

5. Eat Your Fruits and Veggies

A healthy diet plays an important role in our overall health and appearance and many fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants!  So try to eat a variety of fruits, veggies, whole grains, nuts, and seeds as often as you can.

We’d love to hear about your skincare resolutions and how your plan to revamp your skincare routine in 2023! Leave a comment telling us what you’re working on. And if you need a little bit of extra support, book an appointment with us and we can help you determine what steps you need to take in order to achieve your goals!
