Sclerotherapy Pricing & Aftercare

Before Treatment:
-
Compression Stockings: These will need to be purchased either at a medical supply store or Online. 20/30 mm Hg strength is recommended. Stockings will need to be long enough to cover all treated veins. Full length stockings the most comfortable and easy to use, but knee high or thigh high can be used.
-
Wear loose fitting shorts to your visit. These are typically easier and more comfortable than a gown.
-
Avoid wearing lotion on legs on day of procedure.
- Bring compression stockings with you to your visit.
What to Expect:
-
Pain: You may experience mild stinging or aching during and post injection.
-
Itching: The injected solution acts as an irritant to the blood vessel. Some individuals may experience some mild itching as a result.
- Darkening of vessels: This is part of the normal treatment course. As the blood begins to clot and the vessel collapses, it will take on a darkened appearance before lightening.
-
“Trapped blood”: This may feel like a sore lump and occurs often in large varicose veins after treatment. We typically recommend draining the site with a small puncture which is done in the office, 2 weeks after.
- “Blushing”: This is the appearance of new tiny spider veins around an injection site. This occurs in roughly 25% of treated patients and will frequently resolve naturally without additional treatments.
After Treatment:
-
Wear your compression stockings for 14 days following your treatment. They can be taken off to shower. We suggest wearing them while sleeping but if this is too difficult it is okay to have them off after the first 3 days.
- If you have any swelling or pain, ice after your procedure in 15 minute on, 15 minute off intervals, for the first 24 hours.
-
Avoid Motrin or Advil. Take over the counter Tylenol as needed for discomfort.
- Take over the counter Benadryl as needed for itching.
-
Avoid any strenuous exercise or weight lifting for 7 days following procedure.
- No airplane rides for at least 7 days after treatment.
-
Do not expose treated area to the sun or tanning bed for 1 week following treatment.
Side Effects:
- Common: Redness, swelling, bruising, pain with injection, matted blood vessels, itching, need for multiple treatments

Similar Treatments on the Market:
Several sclerosant solutions are used in sclerotherapy, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Here's a breakdown of the most common types:
- Types of Sclerosants used in sclerotherapy
- Sodium Tetradecyl Sulfate (STS)
- Polidocanol (POL)
- Hypertonic Saline
- Ethanolamine Oleate (EO)
- Glycerin and Phenol
- Laser treatments. While great at decreasing the appearance of blood vessels, spider veins and varicose veins have a makeup that makes laser treatments less effective at treating than say rosacea. This treatment typically will end up costing much more due to the number of “retreatments” needed.
- Endovenous thermal ablation. This is a great therapy for larger varicose veins but can be a bit of overkill on smaller vessels where sclerotherapy will be just as effective and cost a lot less without the need of multiple tests and ultrasounds.
Why Choose us for Your Frax Treatment
-
Manual Injection Experts
Sclerotherapy is a highly technical, "operator-dependent" procedure that requires a steady hand and an intimate knowledge of vascular flow. While many clinics shy away from this method due to its complexity, we have dedicated ourselves to mastering the art of the injection. We refuse to offer a "substandard" surface laser when we know that internal sclerotherapy is the clinical gold standard for leg veins.
-
Complete Vascular Toolkit
Your legs shouldn't have to fit our inventory; our inventory should fit your legs. Because we house a comprehensive array of both laser and injectable vascular treatments, we are never forced to "upsell" a treatment that isn't right for you. We recommend Sclerotherapy only when it is the absolute best tool for your specific vein depth and size.
-
The Dermatological Edge
As board-certified dermatologists and advanced practice providers, we view your legs through a clinical lens that a standard spa or plastic surgeon’s office simply cannot match. We understand the relationship between your skin’s health and the underlying circulatory system, allowing us to provide recommendations that are as safe as they are transformative.
-
Radical Transparency
We aren't looking for a quick transaction; we are looking to be your lifelong partner in skin health. This means we provide honest, realistic timelines for vein clearance rather than "hopes and dreams." By rejecting the high-pressure "sales" approach, we ensure you feel confident and informed throughout your entire treatment journey.
Ready to embrace your flawless legs? Contact Smart Skin Dermatology today to schedule a consultation and discover if sclerotherapy is the key to unlocking your confidence! Remember, consistency is key! Schedule follow-up treatments if needed to achieve the desired results and maintain your vein-free future.
Sclerotherapy FAQ
Is it true that lasers are better than Sclerotherapy?
This is a common misconception in the aesthetic industry. While lasers are excellent for fine facial vessels, Sclerotherapy remains the "gold standard" for treating spider and reticular veins on the legs. The reason many clinics claim lasers are superior is simply that Sclerotherapy is a more difficult, "operator-dependent" technique that requires an expert injector's hand. Because the medicated solution travels through the vessel, it clears the vein from the inside out—something a surface laser cannot do. As skin specialists, we are experts at identifying which specific veins require the precision of Sclerotherapy and which might benefit from a laser, ensuring you receive the most effective treatment for your unique anatomy.
