Say Goodbye to Unwanted Leg Veins with Sclerotherapy

Say goodbye to spider veins and varicose woes! Sclerotherapy at Smart Skin Dermatology offers a minimally invasive solution to erase unwanted leg veins and restore the confidence you deserve.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a targeted treatment involving injections of a solution directly into varicose or spider veins. This solution irritates the vein wall, causing it to collapse and fade away naturally. This effective method tackles various leg vein concerns. Benefits include:

  • Minimal Discomfort: The procedure is typically painless, with only slight stinging or aching.

  • Long-lasting Results: Treated veins won't reappear.
  • No Downtime: Resume your normal activities right after treatment.
  • Safe and Effective: Sclerotherapy has proven success with minimal side effects.

Sclerotherapy: The Smart Skin Difference

Sclerotherapy Experts

Many specialists don’t use sclerotherapy because it is both difficult to inject and comes with risks if it's not done by an expert. We don’t believe this is a good enough reason to sell you a substandard alternative. That's why we took the time to become experts.

Comprehensive Technologies

We have access to a full range of treatment options. We have solutions to all needs and won’t be subject to recommending something just because that’s what we have, like most practices.

Dermatologists are Skin Specialists

We know everything there is to know about skin. This allows us to go beyond what can be achieved at a spa or plastic surgeon’s office to give you the best recommendations for your goals.

Patients for Life Transparency

We want patients for life, not for one round of treatment. This means we won’t sell you on hopes and dreams. Seeking out cosmetic intervention is hard enough without the car salesman approach. We promise to provide options to meet you where you are at and retain you for life.

Sclerotherapy: Cut Through the Marketing Noise

Lasers are better

This simply is not true. Sclerotherapy is the most effective treatment of spider veins. They can however require a skilled hand to treat and this is why most will claim lasers do a better job. We are experts at identifying the different types of veins and recommending lasers only for particular veins.

What happens after sclerotherapy?

Mild redness, swelling, and bruising are normal and typically resolve within a few days. We'll guide you on post-treatment care, like wearing compression stockings and avoiding sun exposure.

Does sclerotherapy hurt?

Most people only experience slight stinging or aching during the injections. We may also apply numbing cream for extra comfort.

How long does it take to see results?

You may see some fading within a few days, but full results take around 6-8 weeks. Patience is key for the injected solution to do its magic!

How long do results last?

Treated veins won't reappear, but new ones may develop over time. We can discuss preventative measures and potential follow-up treatments during your consultation.

sclerotherapy Treatment Areas

Legs below the knee but above the ankle.

sclerotherapy Common Treatment Targets

Spider Veins

These fine, red or blue branches commonly appear on thighs, calves, and ankles.

Small Varicose Veins

These larger, bulging veins can cause discomfort and fatigue.

Medium Varicose Veins

Larger varicose veins may also be treated, however the risks associated increase. We require an ultrasound from a radiologist before injecting any medium to large Varicose veins to ensure safety.

sclerotherapy Post-treatment Care

Wearing compression stockings for 14 days. Purchase medical-grade stockings (20-30 mmHg) online or from a medical supply store. Full-length pantyhose are often the most comfortable option.

Icing the treated area for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off for the first 24 hours.

Avoiding strenuous exercise and weight lifting for 7 days.

Avoiding sun exposure for at least 14 days.

Avoid flying for a minimum of two weeks after treatment.

Arnica Supplement: Consider taking arnica to potentially reduce bruising.

Several sclerosant solutions are used in sclerotherapy, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Here's a breakdown of the most common types:

  • Types of Sclerosants used in sclerotherapy
    • Sodium Tetradecyl Sulfate (STS)
    • Polidocanol (POL)
    • Hypertonic Saline
    • Ethanolamine Oleate (EO)
    • Glycerin and Phenol

  • Laser treatments. While great at decreasing the appearance of blood vessels, spider veins and varicose veins have a makeup that makes laser treatments less effective at treating than say rosacea. This treatment typically will end up costing much more due to the number of “retreatments” needed.

  • Endovenous thermal ablation. This is a great therapy for larger varicose veins but can be a bit of overkill on smaller vessels where sclerotherapy will be just as effective and cost a lot less without the need of multiple tests and ultrasounds.
