What is Frax Laser Resurfacing?

Frax Laser Resurfacing is a sophisticated dual-wavelength treatment utilizing the advanced Frax 1550 and Frax 1940 technologies. The Frax 1550 laser penetrates deep into the dermis to target texture and scarring, delivering thermal energy that triggers the body’s natural healing response and significantly boosts collagen production. Complementing this, the Frax 1940 laser specifically addresses the skin’s more superficial layers, effectively lifting away pigmentation and smoothing fine lines. Unlike traditional ablative lasers that remove the entire skin surface, this fractional approach targets precise microscopic areas while leaving the surrounding tissue intact. This ensures faster healing, enhanced safety, and minimal downtime. Together, these dual-depth lasers provide a highly effective approach to tackling a wide range of skin concerns, leaving you with a smoother, brighter, and more youthful complexion.

      Frax Laser: How it works

aging diagram sun damage, wrinkles, and scarring

Aging occurs with time & environmental factors

This includes collagen loss, pigmentation, pre skin cancers, sun damage, fine lines, wrinkles, scarring, acne scarring, etc.

1550 and 1940 laser wavelengths frax laser

Two laser settings: Deep & Superficial

Laser targets water. The skin is made up of water. By targeting the main building block, we can effectively resurface the skin.

Anything above 1320 nanometers will begin to target water. By staying close to that lower threshold, we are able to achieve "non-ablative" resurfacing. The Frax laser has both a 1550 and a 1940 nm setting.

      The Treatment Explained

There are 3 states of matter: solid, liquid, and vapor. A traditional ablative resurfacing laser, such as a CO2, laser turns liquid into vapor.

A frax laser is like cooking a nice cheese sauce. You must temper the heat without heating too quickly to avoid burning or curdling. A lower "simmer" will achieve the results you are looking for.

A non-ablative resurfacing is only possible if we can heat up the water to “simmer” just hot enough to avoid the vapor that comes with a scalding "rolling boil".

      1550 frax laser results

      Results: Deep non-ablative resurfacing

The 1550 nm laser targets water closer to its lowest absorption point. This lets the laser travel deeper into the skin before becoming absorbed by the skin's water makeup.

This deeper wavelength is great for targeting textural concerns by promoting “Neocollagenesis”, the scientific term for collagen growth. It tackles issues like wrinkles and scars.

      1940 frax laser results

      Results: Superficial non-ablative resurfacing

The 1940 nm laser is a little stronger so it gets absorbed by the skin's water makeup closer to the surface. This superficial resurfacing is great at taking care of the upper layers of the skin.

This wavelength is great for targeting issues like pigmentation, precancerous damage, and superficial fine lines. This wavelength is the Hollywood secret to preventative aging. One per year, and you will age much more slowly.

      Frax Laser Treatment Targets

      Wrinkles

      Wrinkles

Why just hide lines when you can rebuild the skin underneath? This dual-depth laser technology stimulates fresh collagen production to smooth out fine lines and deep-set wrinkles from the bottom up.

      Pre Skin Cancers

      Pre Skin Cancers

Prevention is the best medicine for your skin. This targeted laser therapy identifies and eliminates precancerous sun damage at the surface, clearing away actinic keratoses while stimulating healthy, new cell growth in their place.

      Brown pigmentation

      Brown pigmentation

Target discoloration at its source. Whether it’s freckles, age spots, or hormonal pigmentation, our laser technology lifts away excess melanin and sweeps away surface dullness for a clear and uniform skin tone.

      Health & Preventative

      Health & Preventative

The gold standard for proactive skincare. This non-ablative treatment optimizes skin health by reinforcing the dermal layer, ensuring your skin remains firm, clear, and youthful for years to come.

      Skin Tightening

      Skin Tightening

True firmness starts deep within. By creating thousands of microscopic thermal zones, this treatment triggers a massive "healing response" that replaces old, depleted fibers with fresh, tight collagen for a more lifted and sculpted appearance.

      Melasma

      Melasma

The sophisticated solution for complex pigment. This treatment offers a controlled, gentle way to fade the persistent patches of melasma that topical creams often leave behind.

      Acne scars

      Acne scars

Seamlessly blend surgical and traumatic scars into your natural skin. By triggering a targeted healing response, the Frax 1550/1940 duo works to flatten raised areas, soften edges, and improve the overall texture of scarred tissue.

      Fine lines

      Fine lines

By delivering targeted heat to the upper layers of the dermis, the Frax 1940 triggers a surge of fresh collagen that naturally plumps the skin and irons out those faint "etched" lines.

      Aftercare

      Before Treatment:

      • Sun Avoidance: This is important in the 2 weeks leading up to your treatment. We cannot treat patients who have an active sunburn or have too much recent sun exposure.
      • Numbing Cream: A good layer of numbing cream should be applied to the treatment area 30 minutes prior to treatment.

      • Valtrex: If you have a history of cold sores, patients should be on a preventative five-day course of anti-viral medication that starts the day before your treatment.

      • Bleaching Cream:  Many patients will be prescribed some form of bleaching regimen leading up to their laser treatment. Use as directed by your provider leading up to the appointment.

      After Treatment:

      • Post Procedure: Skin will be red and feel very hot, much like a bad sunburn. Ice packs will be provided directly after the procedure to help with the burning sensation. Heat fades over 2 - 24 hours.
      • Day 1: Skin will be very dry and sensitive. Moisturizing and icing are key. An ointment moisturizer is best during the first few days (Aquaphor, Vaseline, etc). Ice in 15-minute intervals on, 15 minutes off, intervals over the first 24-48 hours will help with redness and heat.

      • Day 2-3: Expect all dark spots on your face to grow darker in appearance. Redness and mild swelling can persist for some time.
      • Day 4-8: Your brown spots can develop a “coffee grounds” appearance and texture; this is normal. Do not scrub or pick at them, as they will fall off naturally. You can now transition to a gentle cream-based moisturizer. A powder-based foundation is preferred during this time if makeup is worn. Some very light & gentle exfoliation with a damp wash cloth can now help on days 7-8, but DO NOT PICK.

      • General Aftercare: Avoid exposure to the sun for 2 weeks. Avoid any irritants or bleaching agents for 2 weeks after your treatment. Any mild discomfort you may have can be relieved with acetaminophen (Tylenol). Wait 6-8 weeks to see full results.

      Side Effects:

      • Common: Redness, swelling, crusting, itching, peeling, temporary darkening of pigmentation
      • Rare: Scarring, hyperpigmentation, cold sores, infection

      Similar Treatments on the Market:

Many lasers and devices claim to target similar concerns, but our Frax laser treatment stands out for its unique, fractional approach that minimizes downtime and delivers consistent, predictable results. Here is how it compares:

      • CO2 Full Laser.
This is the “CO2 Full Laser's little brother” It achieves the same end goal but is a gentle version of this resurfacing. We typically say that roughly 6 Frax Laser treatments will be equivalent to almost 1 full-face CO2. Advanced Resurfacing has the benefit of a more minimal healing experience but has the drawback of requiring a series of treatments.
      • Pico Resurfacing.
The Pico Resolve Laser utilizing a refractive setting (resolve) is very similar and probably the best comparison. In general a pico photorejuvenation treatment is slightly weaker and less effective than a Frax treatment. Although a pico treatment is better for darker skin types.
      • IPL Photofacial.
An IPL is comparable to a Frax Laser treatment in the treatment of brown pigmentation. However, an IPL will not help with fine lines and wrinkles despite what marketing tactics will tell you. A Frax Laser treatment will be the best option for someone who wants to see improvement in both pigment and texture.
      • Microneedling. Microneedling is the opposite of an IPL. It will be comparable to the Frax Laser in terms of improvement of texture, but will not treat brown pigmentation or sun damage.
      • Chemical Peel.
Chemical Peels are comparable only for melasma patients. Chemical peels will boast a lot that they simply cannot deliver on. No real textural improvement will be seen in comparison to a Frax Laser treatment. It will also not do as well with pigment.

      Frax Laser FAQ

Does the Frax 1550/1940 laser treatment hurt?

While any effective laser resurfacing involves a sensation of heat, the Frax 1550/1940 system is designed with patient comfort in mind, and most of our patients describe the sensation as quite tolerable. To ensure your experience is as pleasant as possible, we offer a tiered approach to pain management. For every session, we utilize high-potency topical numbing creams and integrated  air-cooling that streams chilled air over the skin during the procedure.

For more intensive treatments or for those with sensitive skin, we provide advanced comfort options including local nerve blocks or oral sedation (which requires a designated driver). Our goal is to ensure you feel relaxed and confident while we achieve the clinical results you’re looking for.
